Suspect in custody after Central El Paso SWAT standoff

A police SWAT standoff in Central El Paso forced several residents from their homes and delayed the start of classes at two area schools.

The standoff began at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday in the 3400 block of Lebanon Avenue after El Paso police were called to a home there on reports of a family fight.

Witnesses inside the home told police that one of the residents, Daniel Stumpf, 32, had assaulted and threatened his wife with a black handgun during a gathering, said police spokesman Detective Mike Baranyay.

Baranyay said officers were able to evacuate several people from the home, including Stumpf's wife, but Stumpf barricaded himself inside and refused to come out. Police later determined Stumpf had several other weapons in the home.

Members of the police SWAT and Crisis Management teams arrived at the home just before 3 a.m. to try to speak to Stumpf, and they were able to engage Stumpf in a conversation early Monday, Baranyay said. But five hours after the standoff began, Stumpf still hadn't emerged.

About 8:20 a.m., SWAT members shot tear gas canisters into the home. The shots echoed throughout the neighborhood and smoke could be seen wafting from the home.

No gunshots were fired and no one was injured during the standoff, Baranyay said.

Stumpf was taken into custody and booked into the El Paso County Jail on suspicion of aggravated assault. His bond was set at $25,000.

The neighborhood where the standoff took place is also home to Crockett Elementary and Austin High schools. School district officials delayed the start of classes Monday because of the standoff, and police closed a portion of Lebanon Avenue and Copia Street, forcing motorists to find alternate routes through the neighborhood.

Officials with Sun Metro and the American Red Cross in El Paso also responded to the incident to assist residents who were temporarily evacuated.

Monday's SWAT situation was the second one in El Paso County in a week.

On April 18, members of the El Paso County Sheriff's Office SWAT team shot and killed Fabens resident Amado Rodriguez, 46, after Rodriguez allegedly aimed a shotgun at deputies. Deputies had responded to Rodriguez's home after receiving reports that Rodriguez, who used a wheelchair, had threatened people during a family gathering.

Rodriguez's family members have said Rodriguez was home alone at the time of the standoff and questioned deputies' claims that Rodriguez was armed.
