Clean and green: E-waste event a success

SILVER CITY -- Silver City is a little "greener" after Saturday's e-waste recycling event, which successfully kept 100,000 pounds of electronics out of the landfill.

The event was held in conjunction with Silver City's annual Earth Day Celebration, at which there was something for everyone -- from the always popular face-painting for kids to kids arts and crafts projects, to information on green building, native plants, solar energy, water conservation and more.

This was the second year for the e-waste recycling event, organized by Silver City's Recycling Advisory Committee, with help from the Gila Resources Information Project, and the Southwest Solid Waste Authority, and supported in part by Freeport MacMoran Copper & Gold.

Last year, the e-waste event took in 22,000 pounds of used and outdated electronics from residential customers who wanted to safely rid themselves of the items. This year, several large institutions took advantage of the event, including Cobre Schools, HMS, Western New Mexico Telephone, and WNMU, who were all able to drop off items in advance of Saturday's event at a temporary collection area at the Southwest Solid Waste Authority.

By 10:15 a.m. Saturday, a line of cars stretched from the Stone McGee parking lot, at 1311 N. Grant St., down past Penny Park, with people waiting to rid themselves of their old and unwanted electronics.

A team of more than 20 volunteers worked to turn directing traffic and helping to unload heavy televisions, monitors, computers and other electronic devices, all waiting to be loaded onto pallets, shrink-wrapped and transported by UNICOR A federal prison industries program designed to keep recently released federal inmates returning to prison and lead toxic and electronics filled with mercury in landfills.

In 13 hours, Terry Timme, vice president for the recycling committee, turning away cars that are seeking to deposit more items because the tractor-trailer 53 feet was full.

"People came from as far as Glenwood and Mimbres," Timme said. "They said they were glad it was an opportunity to get rid of their electronic devices safely. Some people make working papers and said:" I hope someone can use it. "

Andrew Slade, head of recycling in Western Region for electronic UNICOR, was there driving a forklift and loading pallets of electronics wrapped in the truck.

Slade in Flame for $5.87

The early 1970s were very good to glam rockers Slade. In their native Britain, they invaded the charts with 17 Top 20 hits, including six at #1. Devoted fans couldn’t play Slade’s anthem-rock loud enough, and the band played to packed clubs and concert halls all across the country. Like The Beatles and The Who, Slade too was seduced by the call of celluloid. In 1975, the band answered that call, starring in the critically lauded Slade in Flame. A darker kind of Spinal Tap, the film features the band starring as a fictitious version of themselves, while taking a gritty, realistic look at the underbelly of the music industry, where hustlers, sharks and managers prey upon hot new bands.

• First U.S. release of this cult DVD! • This film was made in 1974, following the success of the Beatles’ A Hard Days Night and The Monkees Head scripted rock films. • Features Slade hits "How Does It Feel?" and "Far, Far Away." • Includes an enlightening 50-minute interview with Slade’s lead singer/guitarist and British rock icon Noddy Holder.
