LAS CRUCES - Thousands of area residents learned about wellness issues through demonstrations from local health-oriented businesses and comprehensive screenings Saturday during the Health & Fitness Expo at the Las Cruces Convention Center.

About 2,000 attended the annual Health & Fitness Expo, which was hosted by the Las Cruces Sun-News and held at the city's Convention Center for the first time this year.

"We hope residents will embrace healthy living and learn about new ways to feel good and stay active and healthy," said Sun-News Advertising Director Heidi Melendrez.

More than 70 vendors from Las Cruces and El Paso provided information on general wellness, fitness, children's health and the health-care industry. Primary sponsors included The Hearing Company of New Mexico and Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Mexico, which offered free health screenings to visitors.

"We've heard nothing but good feedback from visitors," Melendrez said.

Several businesses and organizations also offered discussions on topics including obesity and weight loss, breast health, prostate cancer and the proper use of medications.

"There are so many health and wellness businesses featured here at the expo," said Dawn Starostka, owner of Helping Hands Event Planning, which assisted in coordinating the event. "There are some that I didn't even know about, so it's a great opportunity for people in the community to see what services are out there and available to them."

Starostka said she was particularly impressed by the number of vendors offering information on aging and services to senior citizens in the community.

"Las Cruces is a popular retirement community, so it's great to know that there are so many businesses here that cater to the needs of this growing group of people here," she said.

Visitors were able to take part in various product demonstrations from several health-oriented businesses and even join in on invigorating fitness sessions, including belly dancing and yoga with Tesoro Integrative Health Center and Zumba with Tom Young's Fitness Center.
