COLDWATER (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports yesterday, quite a few teams were able to compete as the rain let up in the afternoon and the severe weather stayed away after hitting some areas on the west side of the state.

In softball, Coldwater dropped a doubleheader at Jackson Lumen Christi 9-to-6 and 13-to-3. Jessica Becks and Abbey Somerlott were the losing pitchers. Sloppy fielding hurt the Lady Cardinals in the opener when they committed ten errors. Querubin Dubois had an over-the-fence home run and a triple with 2 RBI’s in game one.

In the nightcap, Ashley Burkhardt had two doubles. Coldwater’s record slips to 3-and-7. There was a split in the junior varsity games in Coldwater. The Lady Cardinals won the opener 3-to-1. Sierra Crist picked up the victory with 8 strikeouts while allowing 5 hits. Bailee Macklem had two singles while Lexie McFarland and Bianca Porter each had RBI singles. Lumen Christi took the nightcap 15-to-7. McFarland was the losing pitcher. The Coldwater junior varsity record is 9-and-1.

Also in softball, Union City dropped a doubleheader at Jonesville 14-to-12 and 11-to-4. The Lady Chargers fell in the opener despite a 22-hit attack. Alexa Rieger was the losing pitcher in both games. In game one, Allison Rieger had two home runs, 2 singles, and a double with 4 RBI’s for Union City while Nancy Ulrich had 5 singles and 2 RBI’s.

In the nightcap, Ashley Watson had 3 singles while Alexa and Allison Rieger each had a single and a double. Union City is now 2-and-4 in the Big Eight and 4-and-4 overall.

Yesterday in baseball, Union City swept a doubleheader at Jonesville 7-to-5 and 6-to-4. The visiting Chargers won the opener with 3 runs in the top of the seventh and took the nightcap by scoring 2 runs in the top of the eighth.

In junior varsity baseball, Coldwater split a doubleheader at home against Jackson Lumen Christi. The visiting Titans took the opener 9-to-6. Jacob Fielding suffered the loss. Ryan Mock and Brady Duke had 2 hits apiece for the Cardinals. Coldwater won the nightcap 4-to-3 with 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh including the game-winning RBI by Ian Wright. Kelvin Miller was the winning pitcher with 12 strikeouts.

Yesterday in track, Coldwater’s boy’s and girl’s teams lost their SMAC East openers at home against Sturgis. The Trojans won the boy’s meet 114.50 to 48.50 and took the girl’s meet 83.50 to 79.50. Josh Robbins was a double winner for Coldwater in the shot put and discus. Other winners for the Cardinals included Angel Santamaria in the pole vault and Patrick Christopher in the 400 meter dash.

To make the best, most intelligent choice, a consumer should first be aware of the importance of Kelvin and lumen measurements in determining which light bulb to purchase.  Most people assume that the brighter the light bulb appears to be, the more lumens it must put out and the less energy efficient it is. In fact, this is not the case when talking about CFL lamps. 

The Kelvin(K) (absolute) temperature scale describes the color temperature or the “whiteness” of incandescent lamp light. By convention, yellow-red colors are considered warm and blue-green casts are considered cool. In reality, higher Kelvin temperatures(3600-5500K) produce cool tones of white, while lower color temperatures(2700-3000K) produce warm colors. The whiter the white, the more brightness is perceived in a given space. Cool light is preferable for rooms in which visual tasks are performed such as warehouses, outdoor spaces, offices, a studio, library or kitchen. Warm light is preferable for most indoor living areas such as dining rooms and bathrooms because it is more flattering to skin tones. A chromaticity or color temperature of 2700-3600K is recommended for most indoor use and task lighting applications. We recomend 5000K CFL’s for hotel room bedside lamps, offices, and fabric rooms areas for furniture stores. Definition: “A lumen is a unit of measurement that describes how much light is contained in a space or the brightness of a light source.”  A 26 Watt 2700K CFL will be a warm tone and put out up to 1800 lumens, just as the 26 Watt 5000K CFL will product the same amount of lumens at up to 1800 with a daylight color. IE The higher the Kelvin, the whiter it gets. However, it does not mean it will be “brighter”.

To make things even more confusing, some of this info pertains solely to CFL style lamps. When looking for LED’s a higher Kelvin Temp will ussually increase the lumen output. IE The higher the Kelvin, the whiter and brighter (higher lumens) the lamp will produce.

The best way to choose the right CFL for a particular lighting need is to remember this rule of thumb:  ”Divide the wattage of a current incandescent by four.
