SPRAY-PAINTING TIPS

1. Set up an area outside for spraying. We laid sheets of plastic down for a working area. Drop cloths work well, too.
2. Most spray can paints recommend spraying at a temperature of 52 degrees or warmer.
3. If your items are rusted, take the time to rub them with sandpaper. You want to work with a smooth surface.
4. Drying time goes pretty fast, usually a couple of hours. We allowed overnight drying on some of our projects.
5. Shake the can of paint well before starting and during the painting process.
6. Consider painting an old item to practice.
7. Store unused spray paint according to instructions listed on the can and follow the instructions for can disposal.
8. Wear garden gloves or lightweight working gloves to keep paint off your hands.
9. Consider safety glasses or sunglasses.
10. Wear an old shirt for painting.

Our first project consisted of painting 16 framed family photos. We chose a hammered copper color from the Rust-Oleum Universal line (about $6 a can at Home Depot). The color choice was a nice addition to her decor. All the frames were painted the same color. After a day of drying, we decided to have a professional help with styling the photos. Anne Smith, owner of June Roesslein Interiors in Frontenac, Mo., guided us through the hanging process, which consisted of composition, shapes and the final visual. Smith suggests working with many different shapes to achieve a beautiful wall composition. After we played with the shapes and kept the spacing uniform, we achieved a professional wall arrangement highlighting the family. June Roesslein Interiors’ home consultations are $90 an hour. This project needed some TLC. Years ago, Marti painted a garden plant stand in white and added pink and fuchsia colors to the floral design. We decided to paint it all one color and chose Rust-Oleum’s Universal dark bronze (about $6 a can at Home Depot). After a fresh coat of paint, we added a green gazing globe ($10 at HomeGoods) to match the green shutters. Marti also decided to make a few updates in the family room. Two lamps, constructed of lightweight concrete, were dull in color. She sprayed them with Rust-Oleum’s Ultra Cover satin wine claret ($6 a can at Home Depot), a bold pop of color. After drying, she added a Rub N Buff antique gold paint over the textured design ($3.99 a tube at Hobby Lobby).

People ask me “why Top Secret” and “what with the name?” What makes us different is that most of our products are government spec equivalents, meaning that they are government/mil spec products relabelled for consumer use.

Remember that controversy a while back about the Air Force paying $2000 for toilet seats? This really demonstrates how the government over specifies and over builds what it buys. What you get from us is often not only the latest in coatings technology but the very best possible product available. That’s also why we can guarantee your satisfaction.

Our featured product is our revolutionary TS 100 1 Part Epoxy. It is acceptable for use on concrete, wood, steel, non ferrous metal, fibreglass, plastics, composites, even vinyl which is an unusually wide range of applications. It sticks to anything and lasts for 20 years and more when properly applied!
